What Are The After Effects Of Accidental Ingestion Of Polident Liquid?

default
Posted on Wed, 20 Jan 2016
Question: I just swallowed some of the Polodent liquid by mistake.
It was quite diluted by using one capsule in four containers of the fluid,
but I could taste the difference between it and the tea I thought I was drinking.
Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Not a major emergency to get worried as it was diluted !!!

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the consultation at my virtual clinic!
I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns today and will put my best efforts to get you out of this situation.

Polident Liquid contains very mild bleach, baking soda, citric acid, preservatives like EDTA and some other salts and an alkaline ingredient to make it easy to remove the denture plaque and microflora layer (Important caution: dentures to be cleaned when outside mouth).

I have seen patients with accidental ingestion of denture cleaner effervescent tablets and non-effervescent capsules. Very few of them had any serious issues. It is so mild liquid that it can't usually cause perforation of stomach wall. If you have had ingested undiluted and undissolved product, then it may have caused ulceration (denudation of inner stomach wall).

If you don't have a previous history of stomach problems like persistent hyperacidity, h. pylori bacterial infection of stomach, stomach ulcer or GERD etc, then you are good to go without any major issues.

I preferably suggest you to consult your local Physician for physical examination. I usually add GAVISCON SYRUP in such a situation for better results.

Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you with expert opinion. Please don't forget to give rating (5 stars if agreed) and write a review to help me assist my patients in a better way; and, please don't forget to 'Close This Discussion'.
For any disease you have, a timely follow-up is very necessary regarding the treatment efficacy and to see if there is a need to change the treatment options. So keep a follow up to see how you doing (Always write down my name in the start of your questions at this forum & I will be with you in no time).
