What Are Chances Of Pregnancy After Nordette Pill Intake Followed By Unprotected Sex?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Jun 2014
Question: Hi, I have a question regarding Nordette contraceptive pills. My menstrual period has lasted from 13 May - 16 May 2014. After that, I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend on 20 May 2014. He ejaculated inside me but I was worried so I took 4 tablets of Nordette pills as emergency contraceptive after that, then I took another 4 tablets after 12 hours. And then after 24 hours, I took another 3 tablets, until 23 May around the same time, I took 2 tablets. I had a bit symptoms like nausea, lost of appetite and back pain. But I had a sudden abdominal pain during the evening time on 23 May, so I took 1 tablet of Buscopan 10mg. Thus, my abdominal pain relieved. Should I continue to take the Nordette pills daily? (1 tablet per day) I'm 25 and we are not ready for a baby yet. Am I still having risk of getting pregnant? Please help me! Thanks.

Brief Answer:
This may prevent most of the expected pregnancies

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for consulting us.

You used Nordette pills as a morning after contraception. This regimen can prevent up to 86% of expected pregnancies. Taking 4 pills twice is enough to complete the dose recommended for one unprotected sex incident. It will not cover any further incident.

The symptoms you are having may represent side effects of these pills. You may expect to have bleeding in a couple of days.

You should use a regular & reliable contraception if you are not ready for a pregnancy. Birth control pills are a good option.

You may start taking the pills on regular basis if you have no known medical problem, you do not smoke & if you have no contraindication for the pills.

Best is to start the pills on the first day of your periods. As starting it now may not provide you full birth control protection. You still need to use a barrier contraception like condom.

Wish you good health.

Take care.

Thanks Dr. Qureshi! I've been worried for days! I know my menstrual cycle might up mess up after taking the Nordette pills. So should I stop taking the Nordette pills from now on? Or should I take it on regular basis (1 tablet per day)? And do you suggest to do a pregnancy test after 14 days? Thanks a lot!

Brief Answer:
You may do a pregnancy test.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome back.

If you want to continue Nordette pills, as your regular birth control choice you may do so, but, as I have told you that for the current cycle it will not offer you full birth control protection unique to these pills. You should use condom with it in future at least during this cycle.

Ideal time for full protection is to start the pill on the first day of your cycle.

Yes, you may have break through bleeding any time & you may do a home pregnancy test after 14 days to clarify your doubts. It may not be required if you have your periods.

Hope I am clear this time.

Please write back if you need more help.

Take care.
