Suggest Ways To Gain Muscle Weight

Question: I have always had trouble gaining muscle. At times in my life I have worked very hard working out and was former athlete. I have very skinny legs with almost no calf muscles and a chubby body with large breast and a bigger waste line. I have always this type of body even when I was younger playing hockey and lifting weights everyday. Was wondering if this could be a testosterone thing or something like that?

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Your body type is inherited and people with problems with central obesity have a very difficult time changing the actual shape of their body. The problem with central obesity is it is a different type of fat in that it secretes hormones that adversely affect the cardiac system and inflammation overall.The name for this condition is adiposopathy. I can give you some tips for dealing with this:
1. Research has shown in clinical trials that a supplement of resveratrol 150 mg/day may help with your targeted weight loss with virtual no adverse side effects.Get doctors approval.
2. Periodic periods of fasting ( i.e. one day a week);
3. Check with an endocrinologist and have your hormones tested. Since you mentioned breast development more times than not your hormones are off.Your LH, FSH and testosterone are basic hormones checked.I would also check your thyroid panel.
4. Consult with a exercise physiologist and get on an exercise plan to bulk your legs up while working on cardio for the middle area.
5. Delete added sugar from your diet
6. Cut saturated fat down by choosing leaner cuts of meat, low fat cheese; fat has more than twice the amount of calories as carbohydrates and protein.
7. If you are still sweating and having the symptoms discussed with Dr. Bishnoi, I would check with your doctor regarding your medications, sometimes a switch in psychotropics may help or work against your weight loss, nevertheless, never change medications without your doctors approval.

I hope some of the above suggestions help make a difference. Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
