Question: I'm caregiving for my father (he's living with me), he's at the end of arterial dementia and I dont get much sleep at all, he's had numerous other medical problems also, I'm also dealing with menopause, mood swings etc, plus I have facial hydrosis and with the night sweats and hot flashes i'm soaked all the time. In conjunction to all this, I've also been diagnoses with cervical spinal stenosis at it's worse and have to take tons of meds to alleviate the pain till seeing a surgeon next month. I just dont feel like myself, i'm at my wits end and I dont know which way is up.

Brief Answer:
Can use Gabapentin/Paroxetine for hot flashes

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
I really appreciate the wonderful work you are doing by taking care of your father.

What you are suffering now is due to hormonal changes of menopause.
Hot flashes worsen if one is stressed or overworked.
If feasible I advise you to bring in one of your relative/ helper to help you in taking care of your father until you see the surgeon next month. You need to have some time for yourself too.
At first to reduce the night sweats and hot flashes please try to follow these simple measures:
-Avoid coffee or any other hot drinks
- Avoid smoking if you are a smoker
-wear thin cotton fabric clothes specially while sleeping at night to reduce the impact of hot flashes. Also try keeping ice pack below your pillow and see if this helps.
-Please find time and exercise regularly in the morning and do meditation in the evening. I am aware of your cervical spine problem. You can do exercise under the guidance of trainer without hurting the cervical spine. You can do yoga under the guidance of good teacher. This does help.
- get whole body massage done once a week
-Eat soy proteins like soy milk, tofu etc

I am not aware what medicines you are taking for the cervical stenosis. If hormones are contraindicated in your case then discuss with your doctor and take non hormonal medicines like Paroxetine, Gabapentin etc to treat hot flashes.

Be positive.
I hope this helps. If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.
