Question: Hi
This is for my son , who is 5 and half years old. Since the last three days , he first had fever of around 100 degree, and then since the last two days is having loose motion. But the loose motion is happening only once or twice a day especially at night. He is having slight stomach pain and has a tendency of vomiting. He has vomited twice in these three days. We have given him econorm sachets but have not given any antibiotics. He does have fever at the moment. His stool is a bit sticky and sometimes he is passing little bit of stool in his pants. Kindly advice.

Brief Answer:
Viral Diarrhoea

Detailed Answer:
HI...thanks for consulting on health care magic.

He seems to be having a viral diarrhoea. You are right in not giving antibiotics. No blood in motion - no need for antibiotics. If the kid is active otherwise and passing urine well you need not worry about his loos stools or fever.

Regarding diarrhoea - Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry. Econorm sachets are fine - you can give it for a total of 5 days.

Regarding fever - rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all.

Kindly get back with these questions -
1. Is there any blood in the stools?
2. Is his urine output his usual normal or less?
3. How is usual activity and play?
Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. Wish your kid good health.

Hello Doctor

Thanks for the prompt reply. Please have our answers to the queries :
1. No , there is no blood in the stool. It is slightly whitish in colour and sticky. Frequency is once or may be twice daily.
2. He is otherwise active. Sometimes he is having a stomach pain, that time he becomes somewhat subdued.
3. He is urinating less than the normal , but it is white in color. We have also started giving ORS.
Thanks and rgards

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on treatment

Detailed Answer:
My suggestions -
1. Continue giving ORS as and when needed.
2. Add Z and D drops 1ml once a day for 14 days.
3. For vomiting sensation & nausea, you can give Syrup Ondanisetron as suggested by your pediatrician as it is a prescription drug.
4. If he's active he's on recovery path - don't worry.
