Question: Hi,

My daughter started running a fever on Wednesday evening (it is now Saturday night). It has run between 100.4-103 and was actually below 100 degrees for most of Saturday. We visited her doctor on Thursday and he checked her throat and lungs but didn't diagnose her with anything but possibly something viral. Her fever was actually below 100 degrees for most of Saturday but came back at night (101). I am so worried and plan to take her to the doctor in the morning. How long does the typical viral fever last?

Brief Answer:
Viral ilness may last 4-7 days

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... Many thanks for consulting in Health Care Magic.

Viral illness may last typically 4-7 days. But if the kid is active when the fever comes down after fever medicine, its mostly viral and you need not worry about duration.

If your kid is normal in between fever episodes in a single day...I don't think you should worry as its only 3rd day of fever.

Danger signs include breathlessness/ rash/ low urine output/ seizures/ unconsciousness/ blood in motion. Don't worry if these are not there & the kid is active.

Thank you. I forgot to mention that she has had a cough and runny nose for the past two days.

When would you suggest that I take her back to the doctor?

Brief Answer:
Cough and cold are common in viral illness

Detailed Answer:
Hi....cough and cold are common in viral illness and infact cough will increase when the fever of viral illness starts settling.

Unless she's breathless and not feeding well due to respiratory distress you need not seek medical attention immediately.
