Suggest Treatment For Vaginal Bleeding And Spotting Due To Fibroids

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Feb 2015
Question: I have had fibroids for the last few years. I have had heavy bleeding up until this month. I have had only spotting with no pain or pressure like before, other than the typical period cramps...and those were just uncomfortable, not painful. Last week when I went in for my yearly pelvic exam, the Nurse Practitioner said my fibroids had gotten bigger based on the fact that my uterus was now larger. I did not have an ultrasound at this time. If that is the case why would I have only spotted this month? Could there be another reason for less bleeding?

Brief Answer:
Due to perimenopausal hormonal changes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The uterine fibroids are associated with cramps and a heavy bleeding. The cause of decrease in bleeding this month could be due to a hormonal disturbance. This is common during the perimenopausal age group.
You can wait till your next periods and observe the change in pattern. In case it is due to menopause then surgery is not needed for such benign lesions.
In case there is a heavy bleeding next time then do consult a gynecologist for a detailed evaluation and a surgical treatment.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.

Thank you so much for that answer. Would that account for my uterus getting larger as well?

Brief Answer:
Not due to hormonal changes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The larger size of the uterus is more likely to be due to an increase in the size of fibroids. It is not due to the periomenopausal hormonal disturbances.
Hope my answer is helpful.
