Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: I am experiencing a strange feeling in my ears. It feels like my head is underwater. Or like when you're in an airplane and your ears feel funny. This sensation lasts 1-3 hours. I have diabetes type 2 and rheumatoid arthritis. What is happening to my ears. It affects my sense of hearing. I have been taking Januvia and Invokana for the diabetes. My immune system is poor due to the arthritis medications from past years. Presently I am on Rituxan infusions (since 2006) for the RA.

Brief Answer:
may be eustachian tube dysfunction

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that the symptoms may be related to eustachian tube dysfunction (abnormal function of the eustachian tube).

The eustachian tube is a tube present in the ear that connects the middle ear to a part of back of the throat.
Its main functions are: (1) allowing air and regularizing pressure in the middle eaer
(2)protection of the middle ear from secretions/substances/liquids
(3)clearing or draining of secretions from the middle ear to the back of the throat

Abnormal function /dysfunction of the eustachian tube can cause the symptoms mentioned in some persons.

It can be caused by recent coughs/colds, sinus infection, allergies. Smoking and increased weight can also play a part in affecting function

You may want to consider seeing an ENT doctor to determine if this is your diagnosis or if there is another cause for your issues.

Treatment of eustachian tube dysfunction: (1) in many cases it goes away on its own though this can sometimes take weeks to occur

(2)the use of decongestants , anti histamines and nasal sprays may help.

Nasal sprays such as nasonex, nasocort, flonase, rhinocort

The decongestants and anti histamines are over the counter but the sprays usually require a presecription

(3)if there is no improvement , there are surgical options

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
