I would order for base line:
- an X-ray of the neck which will show aging changes
- carotid and vertebral artery Doppler ultrasound to check arteries condition.

The spine is made up of: vertebrae, discs, spinal cord and nerve roots.

As you get older, the discs dry out and become more sensitive to damage. So your body will try to compensate this by producing small lumps of "extra" bone. After this your spine starts to be too rigid. This lumps also cause narrowing of the spinal column or in the openings where spinal nerves and vessels exit. And that's why you may feel pain and stiffness.

Summary: You feel stiffness because the discs is pressing on the nerves and make spasm of the muscles.
