Suggest Treatment For Sinus Issues And Tinnitus

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Apr 2015
Question: Hello I have had ongoing sinus issues for around 1 year now which has also caused ear problems. It began with bad allergies I believe. So for that year I have taken zyrtec everyday and flixonase spray. I decided to stop that recently as I don't want to take those drugs forever. So recently I have started nasal rinses but have noticed bad tinnitus, can nasal rinses cause tinnitus? Also, as I have had so much fullness in my head I notice I feel out of it quite regularly and that makes me anxious, is that normal with these sort of issues?

Brief Answer:
Could be an intolerance to the rinse itself; explained ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I understand how you have now resorted to going about a nasal rinse or irrigation, and in most cases the nasal rinse helps reduce tinnitus. But in your case, you seem to be experiencing further aggravation or triggering of tinnitus.

Tinnitus is not common with nasal irrigation, but in my opinion it can occur mainly because it was recently reported in a study that repeated nasal irrigation can aggravate symptoms of a sinus infection and even the infection itself. In my opinion, the fullness in your head also being a symptom of a sinus infection, indicates the possibility of my suspicion as well.

Either you are indeed experiencing the phenomenon I mentioned above or the following options:

+Reappearance of symptoms due to the discontinuation of the medications you were previously on

or
+A reaction to the saline solution used in the rinse, as some individuals with blood pressure related issues can experience fluctuations with the use (and absorption) of the saline solution

I would recommend a visit to your ENT specialist for further management and guidance however ma'am. I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.

Thanks. I will maybe leave the nasal rinses for a while and see if it clears. Also since I stopped taking Zyrtec I have been really anxious, a little confused and shakey, is this a normal side effect when you stop taking this drug? I also had a lot of itching which I have read is quite common.

Brief Answer:
Itching is a very common side effect; confusion and tremors rare

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

Yes, the itching is a very common and annoying withdrawal symptom of zyrtec. Other symptoms are indeed rare and not documented, but the confusion and tremors have also been documented. But the anxiety in my opinion could possibly be due to the fact that you are now choosing to live a life without the drug. Although, I would have preferred you not going cold-turkey, and instead slowly going off the drug.

But in the meantime, you could start using bendryl for the itching if at all it becomes a cause for concern ma'am.

I hope this helps. Please do not hesitate to write to me about anything, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Thanks. Just one last thing, would you suggest a nasal spray would be better instead of a nasal rinse? So the ears don't get blocked or too much pressure

Brief Answer:
There are nasal sprays, but I would not advise them for you ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again. :)

Nasal sprays like oxymetazoline and xylometazoline can be used but then again can be used only for a very short duration of time, as these medications have one very common side effect called rhinitis medicamentosa.

With regular use of the above mentioned medications, the very condition it is used to treat is brought upon by the use of these medications from regular use. So I would not advise these medications for you ma'am. A nasal rinse can be annoying, but unfortunately it has been effective and worth the trouble in many individuals, do think about it.

Best wishes ma'am.
