Question: I was given Naproxen by my pcp on tuesday for neck pain. I was told to take one twice a day. I took one tuesday night at 10: 30 p.m. . I took another wednesday morning at 10:00a.m. and again that night at 9:00 p.m. I woke up today and took another at 10:a.m. I'm feeling a little groggy. I'm not sure of the time frames. I'm not sure about taking one tonight? Could you advise me on time frames. It's 500 mg. And he wants me to try it for week before proceeding further with treatment. I also got a tromadol sho and cortisone shot tuesday. Please advise me before going further on time frames . Thanks

Brief Answer:
timing is fine

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The time frames are fine. It is a three times, twice or once daily medication depending on the strength and type used.

500mg is normally used twice daily at intervals of 8 to 12 hours leaning more towards the 12 hour mark.

Based on the time intervals mentioned, this was essentially done.

Drowsiness and dizziness are rare side effects that occur in 3 to 9 % of persons using the medication, this means 3 to 9 persons out of 100 persons who use the medication may have these problems

If it is unbearable, you may need to speak to your doctor

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

I don't feel as groggy today. My neck still hurts some but I know it will take time for the pain to go away. Is it OK to use a heating pad at times for some relief I also have some arthritis hot onI ment that I use to rub for stiffness. Is it OK to use those any suggestions for sleeping. When I sleep on my left side I really wake up hurting.

Brief Answer:
heating pad is a good idea

Detailed Answer:
HI,

I am sorry that you are still having significant pain

Yes, it is definitely okay to use the heating pad, can consider using it two to three times daily for 10 to 20 minutes

Voltaren gel has also been shown to be helpful as a topical pain killer, should be over the counter. Can be added to your regimen

Please feel free to ask anything else

While sleeping should I elevate my head. I haven't been able to sleep much on my left side. I do better on my back. Should I use two pillows or one?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Michelle Gibson James (11 hours later)
Brief Answer:
would depend on the degree of comfort

Detailed Answer:
HI

Sorry about the late reply

It may be best to use one especially if this more comfortable for you.

The use of two pillows, especially if your neck would be at an awkward angle, may worsen the problem

Whatever works best for you and feels to most comfortable would be fine

The doctor prescribed me tizanidine 4mg also muscle relaxer. Will this also help ease the pain also. I haven't taken those yet. He did say I could take those along with the Naproxen. He told me to try these meds for a week . I'm not in as much pain as I was.

Brief Answer:
can be used together

Detailed Answer:
HI

Yes, you can use these along with the naproxen.

As you mentioned, it is a muscle relaxant and it should help to relieve some of your pain.
It may make you drowsy, if you notice that response careful using it and doing any activities that require you to be alert- driving, using sharp tools etc
