Suggest Treatment For Severe Stomach Pain
Question: I am having severe stomach pain at the present time. I have gastritis. I take Prilosec for this. I'm supposed to take one capsule a day before breakfast but today I was in a hurry and forgot to take one. I just took one at 5 o'clock this evening. I am also laying down with a heating pad on my stomach. Sometimes that helps. Do you know of anything else I could be doing?

I have gone through your query and being your physician I completely understand your health concerns...
For how long you are suffering from it? Do you have diabetes or hypertension? Have you ever done with endoscopy?
As far as pain is concerned , you can take prilosec in morning but you can always repeat it whenever you get pain. Apart from it , there are syrups available called antacids ,and antihistamines like zantac . You can use it too. It will help relieve your pain and gives instant relief.
For now, you can try antacid syrup like mucaine gel and see if you get better,
Besides that, you should get your ECG done , since sometimes epigastric pain do mimics cardiac one.
Avoid spicy foods and black pepper. If you are using pain medicines then do take prilosec with it too.
Discuss about the other causes of stomach pain with your attending physician like ulcer , GORD, cardiac pain etc. So that it can be clinically correlated.

After waiting so long for an answer, I finally took a chewable Gaviscon tab!et and that helped. It still hurt a little and I was about to take another one but thought maybe that was a mistake. I don't know what the dosage is for Gaviscon as I no longer have the container they came in.

Zantac works by same mechanism and there is no need of it if your pain is controlled.
Yes, ECG is done for heart condition. Its good to hear that your heart is in good condition.
Endoscopy is a test in which a physician looks into oesophagus and stomach. It is very good test and gives real time image of stomach from inside. It is not a routinely done test. It is indicated only when stomach pain doesn't improve after medications.
