Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain Behind The Ear

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Nov 2016
Question: I just started having pain just below and behind my left ear in the notch. I have sharp, throbbing pain intermittently and it starts happening in the evening. No fever, cold, ear ache, redness or swelling, but touching the area can reproduce the pain. No painful swallowing, just that one area. It's not on or at my TMJ, which I've never had . Jaw movement doesn't make it worse or better.

Brief Answer:
Possibilities detailed out.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Ideally a clinical examination would play an essential role in determining what is wrong. However, that is beyond the scope. Since you mention that it is not over the joint the possibilities to consider are:
* Muscle pull or muscle spasm. In such cases hot compress should help. Take juicy fruits like citrus fruits, and bananas. They contain potassium which is essential for effective muscle contraction and can thereby provide relief.
* Mumps - a viral infection of the parotid gland located just at the TMJ.
* Some inflammation - Taking Aleve (naproxen) should provide relief.

Let me know if I could help further.
