Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Apr 2017
Question: I had been taking an antibiotic microbid for 7 days and have developed severe case of diarreha. The Pharmacist has recommended a pro-biotic Florastor. I have taken one XXXXXXX of FlorastorMax and am curious to know if this is the right treatment for my condition. I was taking microbid for a urinary tract infection. I stopped taking microbid five days ago and the diarreha has not diminished at all. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
fluid and electrolyte replacement, probiotics, hold off solids

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The probiotics are a good idea, they are used in diarrhea to help restore the colon , help it to repair itself.

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea, it is a common side effect of these types of medication.

The other common cause is infection , either viral or bacterial.

In all cases, the treatment is essentially the same, with minor differences.

Holding off solid food for 24 to 48 hours would also be helpful because solids would aggravate the colon. When you restart the solids, use small amounts of dry food initially. Only start these solids when at least 4 hours have passed with no diarrhea.

Mainly liquids should be used to help replace the fluids and electrolytes loss as a result of the diarrhea.

Either an oral rehydration product or sports drink eg gatorade can be used to give back the fluid and electrolytes.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
