Florastor

What is Florastor?

Saccharomyces boulardii is a tropical strain of yeast first isolated from lychee and mangosteen fruit in 1923 by French scientist Henri Boulard. It is related to, but distinct from, Saccharomyces cerevisiae in several taxonomic, metabolic, and genetic properties. S. boulardii is sometimes used as a probiotic with the purpose of introducing beneficial active cultures into the large and small intestine, as well as conferring protection against pathogenic microorganisms in the host. However, in immunocompromised individuals, S. boulardii has been associated with (fungemia) or localized infection, which may be fatal.

Boulard first isolated this yeast after he observed natives of Southeast Asia chewing on the skin of lychee and mangosteen in an attempt to control the symptoms of cholera. In healthy patients, S. boulardii has been shown to be non-pathogenic, non-systemic (it remains in the gastrointestinal tract rather than spreading elsewhere in the body). It grows at the unusually high temperature of 37 °C (98.6 °F).

S. boulardii is often marketed as a probiotic in a lyophilized form and is therefore often referred to as S. boulardii lyo.

Questions and answers on "Florastor"

I had a core breast biopsy last week, results benign, but I got cellulitis on top of incision site. I have psoriatic arthritis and lupus like syndrome. Three doses of Augmentin seems to have woken up a c diff infection that I struggled with a few years ago. I'm on flagly now, off of the augmentin, diarrhea stopped a few hours ago. Taking Florastor. Anything else I should be doing? Any advice? Cellulitis gone. My stomach hurts, I have foul smelling gas, feel awful.

I have had white seed-like spots in my stool today and two days ago. I vomited three times yesterday. I thought I was better because I ate and kept down a salad this morning as well as rice pudding, soup, an apple and peaches for lunch and afternoon snack. I am feeling nausous again and feel like I will probably vomit again this evening, so I am only eating chicken and rice soup for dinner. I have had C. Diff in the past and I have been taking my Florastor tablets the past five days. Should I go to the ER if I throw-up this evening and do you think I should see my GI doctor?

doctor1 MD

hi, Probably you have had a stomach infection. Mild infections normally settle by themselves. Eat yogurt two to three times and keep your food simple vegetarian and bland. Have loads of water and fresh fruit juices. I think this should help. any further episodes of vomiting then you should...

My wife was prescribed vancomycin for 14 days, 250 mg 4x daily. for a c.diff. infection and SIBO. She was also prescribed cholestyramine resin, 9 g, to take at bedtime dissolved in liquid, to address excessive bile pooling in her stomach, as well as to bind to the c.diff. and help with its expulsion. As expected, the vancomycin gave her nausea, cramping and diarrhea almost immediately. Half way into the course of the antibiotic she added (on her own initiative ) Florastor (Saccharomyces boulardii) 500 mg. 2x daily, a probiotic yeast that is not killed by antibiotics and that some studies have shown to be helpful in preventing a c.diff. relapse, and rebuilding a good flora environment in the colon after antibiotic therapy.. She finished the course of vancomycin four days ago, but is still taking the cholestyramine resin and the Florastor. She is also still experiencing nausea and intestinal cramping, as well as loose stools (not exactly diarrhea). I would have thought that the vancomycin would be out of her system by now. So, could it be the cholestyramine resin and/or the Florastor that is causing the continued nausea and cramping? Suggestions?

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
More likely to be due to cholestyramine. Discussion follows

I started taking Florastor yesterday and have taken a total of two capsules so far. I have been so bloated and gassy. I now have stomach cramps and loose stools. Is this because I just began taking them and these symptoms will go away or should I discontinue use? I have to start taking Clindamycin due to a tooth infection so I began taking Florastor to reduce my risk of C Diff. This seems as though it could make things worse.

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
Discontinue Florastor

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

You should stop the probiotics i.e florastor. Yes, clindamycin can lead to pseudomembranous colitis , c difficile overgrowth but probiotics haven't been shown to decrease its risk with prior therapy....

Hi
Question regarding change in bowel movement color.
I am recovering from tonsillitus and a probable sinus infection. I was given a Zpk first which did not totally resolve the infection and then Amox-Clav. I stopped the antibiotic a day ago. As I have a history of IBS, and some recent yeast infections, I was taking Florastor in the evenings and a general probiotic mid day. I have noticed bowel movements have moved from initially loose to formed, but a strange yellowish color. Not neon. Yellow brown- but definitely lighter than normal. Could this be caused by either A-C or probiotic? How long does it take for the the antiobiotic to get out of one's system.

doctor1 MD

Brief Answer:
Need not worry

Detailed Answer:
