Suggest Treatment For Severe Anxiety And Depression

Question: I'm 38 years old and had a baby last July. Been dealing with anxiety and depression. Recent lab work shows an elevated B12 at 1137, glucose at 102, other labs at normal range. I'm shaky and want to know why. I'm currently on a new medication for my anxiety, Lexapro, 10 mg. Started birth control to help stabilize my cycle, hormones. What can you tell me about the shakiness and elevated B12 and glucose as I have not had much of an appetite since having my son.

Brief Answer:
not from high B12

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question,
Normal range for B12 is 500-900 and some references say up to 1000 so your B12 is only mildly elevated. B12 is a water soluble vitamin so elevations have to be extreme to cause problems. You definitely want to stop a multivitamin with B12 if you are taking one since it is not needed.
The shakiness can be from the anxiety or could be a side effect of the lexapro. If it started after you started taking the lexapro, that is most likely. If it started before you started the lexapro, it is most likely a symptom of the anxiety.
If it is from the lexapro, it may go away after you have been on the medication for a while.
Shakiness can also be caused by low blood sugars if you are not eating properly or from a genetic tremor disorder.
If others in the family have such a tremor you may want to see a neurologist for an evaluation.
Make sure that you get enough rest, eat enough food and see your doctor regularly. Counseling and regular exercise may also help with relieving symptoms of anxiety.
I wish you the best,
Dr. Robinson
