Posted on Tue, 22 Nov 2016
Question: I have a swollen sagging elbow joint as a result of gout crystals. It does not hurt but looks bad. I saw a plastic surgeon back in Bellingham who said he might be able to help but suggested I see a ortho surgeon.

Brief Answer:
depends upon what is causing sagging

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
If there is just sagging skin then a plastic surgeon would be the best person to repair this so that it would look better.
However, gout can cause tophi which are hard deposits and those may be better managed by an othopedic doctor who specializes in bones.
The plastic surgeon probably just wants to have you see the orthopedic surgeon to make sure that there are not tophi involved that need to be removed before the skin is repaired.
I suggest that you see the orthopedic surgeon and get their opinion.
Best regards,
Dr. Robinson
