Brief Answer:
Animal extract

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted the question. Sorry to hear about your wife's symptoms. Hope she is better now. Many such thyroid preparations are animal derived and hence can cause allergies in susceptible individuals. However newer modern medicine thyroid preparations are not animal derived and chances of allergies very less.

Brief Answer:
It's not dose dependent

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for your reply. Rather than the dose, the medicine preparation itself was the probable cause of hives and allergy. So even if she takes a smaller dose, allergy can still happen. Iodine tablets itself causing allergy is rare, but not impossible. You may stop it for time being.
Try to take natural source of iodine in the form of sea food and ionized salt.

Drs . thank you for your response last eve, another questions , My wife's skin is showing no hives this AM and no itching. She has a little bit of a headache. At the ER room yesterday they gave her a shot of steroid, and benidryl , pecid. and then gave us a prescription of prednisone dose pack 4,4,4,3,2 in sequential days. Also oral benidryl, and pecin as needed. If she is feeling better and no signs of hives or itching ,etc . , should she follow through with prednisone dose pack starting today
Thanks for your opion ahead

Brief Answer:
Delayed allergy

Detailed Answer:
Sorry for the delay. Depending on the type of allergen which caused hives, there can be a delayed allergic response in some cases. Which means that, allergy /hives can reappear even now for the next few days . So it may be better to start the prednisone for now. Not to worry. They are tapering down the prednisone pretty quickly.
