Suggest Treatment For Radiating Pain In The Knee

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Nov 2016
Question: I have pain around my knee that is radiating through the muscles down both the back and the front of my shin. I suspect that the "summer" shoes I have been wearing all summer are the culprit of this knee inflammation. I have swelling on either side of my knee and have limited weight bearing ability when walking and cannot do steps. I can stretch it out completely. I am not a runner, however I do show my dogs and have been running for 1-5 minutes in the above shoes (sketchers to be more exact) for months now on a 3-5 times a week basis on varying surfaces. I am also a teacher and spend most of my day on my feet.
Since it is Saturday, I am purely looking for help to ease the pain over this weekend and possible thoughts on what I can do o help it until I can get in to see an orthopedic. I am not a Rothman fan, so I know it will not be an immediate doctor appointment and may take time to get.
What shoes do most doctors recommend - I also need to mention I pronate when walking or running.

Brief Answer:
anti-inflammatories, heat, stretches, rest

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
The medications that you are taking will help with inflammation, though I do not think the topical medications work very well. Oral naproxen or ibuprofen should be helpful. You can alternate that with tylenol if the pain is severe.
Heat will increase blood flow to the area and decrease muscle spasms so soaking your legs in a tub or using warm compresses could give you some relief.
Gentle stretches, held for 20-30 seconds may also help, but do not do any jerky motions or anything that makes the pain worse.
Soft foam inserts in good supportive shoes may be helpful.
If you tend to pronate you want to get a shoe with a good arch support or use inserts with a good support. The best inserts are made by Spenco.
Merrell's, Rockport's or XXXXXXX are all names of shoes that should give you good support and help decrease foot pain.
Let me know if you have further questions.
