Suggest Treatment For Pitting Edema In Lower Calf Muscles

Question: Looking for some answers/advice from Doctor regarding pitting edema in lower calf muscles on both legs.I forgot to add another factor. I have an office type of job where I am sitting a lot at computer. Over past 2-3 years I have also sat a lot at computer when at home as well and not that much exercise. It is a second job for me. The swelling has been going on that long as well so it at least seems to correspond. No pain etc but feel a little warmth in feet at times. I also tend to wear socks a lot even at night in bed. I just began removing them as a test last night and this morning swelling was greatly reduced and no more pitting either. But as soon as I got up and walked around for awhile it began coming back.

Brief Answer:
What is your weight and height?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this pitting edema. From the information you have provided, your job seems to be a huge contributing factor. You would need to get this adjusted. The next thing to do is to avoid as much as possible upright and prolonged sitting postures.

The next option is to consider getting elastic and compressive stockings that help with propelling blood back to the heart and prevent stagnation in the lower limbs. The nodes in your groin are very unlikely to be responsible for this swelling. Finally stop putting on stockings that form a band as they impeded blood return to the hear.

Healthy diet, less salt, regular exercise, eat much vegetables and fruits, and above all keep your weight well controlled if there are any issues with that.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Yes I forgot to mention. I am of a lean build and have generally always been in good shape or at least better than friends my age. I am 6' tall and right at 200 lbs. I also forgot to clarify on the photo I uploaded of my calf. I have very large developed calf muscles so the photo can be a little misleading. The actual swelling iss just the lower part beloew the actual calf muscle and prior to ankle. That photo almost makes it appear like entire calf is swollen but it isn't. I know my doctor is doing all the right things to check into it, but a friend has the exact same issue and hers stems from sitting a lot on job plus she is overweight. She thought the sitting too much and not exercising was the issue with mine coupled to wearing socks constantly even when sleeping. Last night I removed socks when I went to bed and noticed the swelling was almost gone this mornbing and there was utterly no pitting anymore. It started up again however when I got up and walked around. Within 2 hours it was back again. I do eat fairly well, ie lots of vegs as well as meat but I also never used salt much on anything until past 4-5 years. Not sure why I started that but I did. I put salt on everything. My doctor checked to make sure it wasn't heart related and he said it isn't. Is it all possible to get this sort of moderate swelling and not be caused by a major issue such as venous insufficiency or lymph system problem or is it always caused by these things? It just dawned on me the other day after Dr visit et that for passt 2+ years I don't exercise at all and sit A LOT at table on computer.

Brief Answer:
Simple and common things first!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have reviewed the added information. Prolonged sitting could be a possible factor. It is extremely common and we should address it first. Also, exercising and cutting back on your salt intake would help with this. I will want you to make these adjustments and we can review to see how well we are progressing.

Good your doctor already ruled out possible heart and kidney conditions. Makes life easier and puts our minds at ease to observe and make necessary adjustments over time.

I wish you well.
