Suggest Treatment For Painful Thrombosed External Hemorrhoid

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Jul 2015
Question: Hi,

I was in the ER last night for a painful thrombosed hemorrhoid . It was drained of blood clots and I was sent home. I have been using Tylenol for pain (I am not having much pain), sitz bath and medicated wipes for itchiness. I was wondering if there is anything else I should watch for, how long the bleeding will last for and when it is safe to return to my physical activities. My job is very physical, I clean houses for about 4 to 5 hours per day. Thank You in advance!

Hello

Thank You for contacting HCM. My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. It usually takes few weeks to see improvement. You can resume your work after 2-3 weeks rest. Meanwhile you should follow strictly to the advises given by your doctor. Apart from that, single important thing to take care off is to prevent constipation. To prevent that, following measures will help:

- Eat a diet rich in fiber, especially from fruits and vegetables like Green beans,
Peas, Red potatoes & Cabbage.
- Your diet should also include: Prunes, beans, Kiwi
- Drink plenty of water

> AVOID(they cause constipation):
fatty & oily food.
spices
carbonated & caffeine drinks
chocolates
Bananas
Dairy products
Narcotics pain killers because they can cause constipation

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!

Thank You for your response. Should I be putting anything on it to avoid infection? Ointment, etc. Also how long typically until the bleeding stops? I am returning to work the day after tomorrow. Thanks!

Also VERY itchy!

Brief Answer:
usually takes 1-2 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello

You are welcome & thank you for the followup query.

It typically takes 1-2 weeks for improvement. Patients are usually recommended to avoid sternous activity for 2-3 weeks. As you will start working in 2 days so my suggestion would be to try to avoid sternous activity. Take 30 mins extra while working but do not keep hurry so that wound is not affected.
You can apply "lignocane gel" externally over the wound. It will act as local anesthetic to avoid pain. You can alternate it with "polyfax plus" ointment which has antibacterial activity. Apart from this take very good care of personal hygiene.

Thank You

Thank You. I have ibs so normal foods mentioned don't help me. Stool softners give me severe cramping. It's been 2 days already since last bowel movement. I am very concerned. Since I have no choice but to return to work I am hoping it will not cause further problems.
