Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Buttock

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: I have pain in my left buttock area. Doctor says x-rays show calcification. I sit now on a seat pad, with area of soreness carved out.

I take calcium tablets, not for a recommendation of a doctor, just seemed like a sensible thing to do.

Could the tablets possibly aggravate the situation? Should I discontinue taking them.

I am 80, no fractures, no frailty.

Brief Answer:
No there is no harm in taking calcium

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I have studied your case. There is no harm in taking calcium and it is good for your bones and muscles. You should take 1000 mg calcium Daily with 60000 unit vitamin D 3 per week for six weeks .
As far as your buttock pain is concerned it can be muscle sore XXXXXXX or dystrophic calcification. you can follow these steps.
1. Avoid sitting on hard surface. You can use ring shape cushion that will deload your buttock area.
2. Sit in warm water tub daily for thirty minutes. It is called sitz bath and it is a type of warm water fomentation.
3.Take Naproxen or Brufen. Steroid injection can be given in severe pain.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. let me know if there is any other followup questions. thanks

For whatever worth, this soreness was triggered by sitting through a 90-minute theater production, hard chair, no intermission. That was May 8th. I had not noticed any soreness before this event.

Any particular therapy for me to do? I had my L1,2,3,4,5 fused a year ago, severe degenerative osteoarthritis, recovering from that just fine. I had extensive recuperative therapy for that. I am contacting my physical therapist today, for a consultation.

Surgery a solution? The orthopedic surgeon I saw 2 weeks ago (first visit) did not see surgery as the appropriate solution. He did not rule out, just said, "you don't want to do that." He prescribed Naproxen. I am going to see him ASAP as I am not seeing any benefit from Naproxen. By the way, he diagnosed my condition as tendonitis.

You mentioned steroid injections. Steroid injections worked great for residual soreness in my hip this past 6 months, following related/unrelated spinal surgery. I am calling today for an appointment with my pain management specialist physician about his new issue.

What's likelihood, one way or another, of getting substantial pain relief?

80 belies my activity level, still very active recreationally, ballroom dancing. No plans to slow down "just because I am 80." I know to listen to my body, yes. Know my limitations.

Like to have answers to questions that I posed to you, and potentially your "closing statement" strategy for me to take.

Brief Answer:
There is no need for surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
As I told you that it is mostly due to muscle soreness and your lumbar spine surgery can also be a contributing factor. I have already suggested you that from now on you need to use ring shape cushion for sitting and hot water tub for sits bath. Ischial tuberosity tendinitis can also be a factor. And in such cases injection at muscle insertion sites is useful.
If naproxen is not working then you can take voveron or Brufen for pain relief. Also Avoid jerky activities, sitting on hard surfaces and prolong sitting like you did when watching movie.
You will get good pain relief. Only thing is that it is a long lasting problem and life style modification is important.
thanks
