Suggest Treatment For Mild Sore Throat While On Advil

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Feb 2016
Question: Ok, I had a very mild sore throat and very slight nasal discharge about 5-6 days ago mostly gone maybe some slight nasal. Two days ago acutely I got a pain in my neck just left and slightly higher than the Adam's apple. The ENT dr. Scoped me thru the nose and said all looked good. He also felt my neck and found nothing suspicious. It only hurts when I swallow but not from swallowing but from the movement. I'm taking Advil which helps. I had what is said to be a no risk neglible sexual encounter but it would be just a sore gland from HIV, right? In other words, you would have swollen glands right? And typically all over right? My glands are not swollen only the one spot I've expressed sore? What do you think Dr? Is it a virus of some sort? Any advise appreciated. Should I be on antibiotics. What I was trying to say and I did not say it well is that if glands were showing signs of HIV they would be swollen not just painful and more than one spot or gland....is that right?

Brief Answer:
I doubt HIV/bacterial infection...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for posting the query, I will try my best to help you with this problem.

After going through the history thoroughly, I am of the opinion that the soreness in the region of the neck could be secondary to the upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) you had before. Usually, after an attack of URTI there will residual inflammation of the mucosa which causes soreness in the neck; this is evidenced by relief in the pain after taking advil.

It is very difficult to diagnose HIV just by the presence of a solitary lymph node or pain in any one particular part of the neck. You would require battery of tests to diagnose and confirm the same.

In my opinion, it would be a simple inflammation secondary to URTI you had. I would not suggest you any antibiotics at this stage. Drink plenty of warm water; avoid chilled food and beverages/ fizzy drinks/ coffee.

Hope I have answered your query; I'll be available for the follow-up queries.
