Question: Sir
My 10 year old son (weight 37 kg) is having a low grade fever (range 98.6° to 99.4°) for the past 15 days or so. Since there were no other symptoms we thought that the temperature would go away itself. But he was regularly maintaining this temp during the day time and no temperature during morning and night. He complained of some uneasiness in his eyes but no other symptoms as such. We took him to the paediatrician and was administered 2 dosage of azithral 200. After this he started having loose motions and stomach ache and no relief in the temperature. So his antibiotics was changed to Zanocin (oflomaxin). Now even after 2 dosage of Zanocin 200 mg, his temperature remains the same, he is feeling nauseous and having slight loose motions with stomach ache. History wise he has never had a low grade fever. Even a slight infection in his body leads to high fever around 104°. This is the first time he has low grade fever and that too for this long. We are extremely worried as to what can be the cause of this. Please advice why do you think such a thing can happen.

Brief Answer:
Get investigated.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
The history seems to me of Viral Diarrhea but we always suspect bactrial infection and Tubercular infection in cases and of fever of such a long duration.
You should get him investigated. I would recommend following initial basic tests for him:
1. Complete blood count.
2. Liver function test.
3. Urine examination.
4. Stool examination.
5. Widal test.
If any issues are found in the reports he would be treated accordingly.
With such a history given by you I would suspect typhoid fever that might have improved slightly due to the use of Ofloxacin for loose stools as it is also effective in typhoid.
So my point is that you should not treat him with random antibiotics now. Get him investigated and treated in a sure way.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

Brief Answer:
Inconclusive reports

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I have seen the reports. They don't show any sign of infection or any other issue.
Now, this can happen in two conditions:
1. Viral fever
2. Alteration of reports due to prior use of antibiotics.
Now, the question is that is he still having the fever and loose motions?
Revert with the asked details and his current prescription given by your doctor.
Good Luck.
