Posted on Fri, 22 Jan 2016
Question: I have a hard maybe 2 cm knot or lump in the corner of the supraclavicular fossae the exact area is the corner by the throat and you have to place your finger behind the collarbone it is located on the muscle inside the fossae cavity it is non visible and you have to press firmly but is very palpable . It's consistency is non XXXXXXX at all boney hard feeling not tender . Sorry for the detail I just want to be exact so you know the area I'm speaking of ..my question is do you think this is a lymph node and that I should be concerned or is there another explanation for this lump maybe it's a bone of some sort? I have looked up the skeletal anatomy and muscular anatomy of the head and neck and there doesn't seem to be any explaination for this lump .

Brief Answer:
Supraclavicular node

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your detailed description, it appears to be a lymph node. The timeline of the appearance of the node/lump/swelling is important. If this was a recent phenomenon then an infectious cause involving the upper limb or a systemic viral infection is likely. If the node persists beyond two weeks then other sinister causes related to such a presentation should be ruled out. Signal or Virchow node is a node in the same supraclavicular fossa that is strongly associated with abdominal malignancies especially Gastric Ca. An excisional biopsy can be undertaken if the swelling does not subside after two weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

It has persisted for long enough. You should go ahead and discuss the biopsy with your doctor.

Systemic infection means affecting the whole body, rather than a single organ or part eg influenza.
