Posted on Mon, 25 Aug 2014
Question: Hello there recently I noticed a small to medium sized lump in the right side of my abdomen, I have also been experiencing some slight stomach discomfort, not so much pain but what I can desribe as a strange sensation. Anyway when I visited my Gp to have the lump evaluated he couldnt exactly fel what I felt, you can not feel this lump lying down only standing up he examined me and said that it was the top part of my liver?? seemed slightly strange. I do have occassional twinges of pain around the lump area. As far as the stomach discomfort go's he didnt have too much to say about it, and I still do not feel at ease, so I have scheduled an appointment with another Gp to see if I can take this further, etc, but with what I have described am I looking at something serious? Im 22 and my general health is fine.

symptoms include : a smallish lump light pain around this lump its soft/firm bit of give when pressed

occassional stomach discomfort in the centre of the abdomen (and on the right side), very mild pain

periods, urine, bowels are fine

appetite is fine

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Its really hard to give precise answer not being able to palpate it. From your description it sounds like a small abdominal hernia. The point is that a hernia is very rare in such location. It is possible if you have had any incision in this area.
Hernia give a lump which is less visible/invisible when lying down and more visible when standing and coughing. It can also give pain.
Such lump can be also small lipoma, however it usually does not give any pain.
Instead of guessing, you should have an ultrasound of this area. This would give the final diagnosis.
This does not sound like something serious.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Okay thank you dont understand why my gp told me that it was the top part of my liver I was feeling.. I seem to get a stitch like pain/twinge just under the rib cage.. I will pursue an ultra sound scan..was just needing some reassurance of this, was fearing alsorts.

No need to fear. I assume that a cancer is what you are afraid of. Please note that cancer in the abdomen does not give a lump under the skin. Moreover you are very young so any cancer in the abdomen is hardly possible. It really sounds like something benign.

thank you I really appreciate your time, I just dont understand why I get this mild pain daily, I hate going back to my GP as he has seen me about this but I just feel that there is more to it than me feeling the top part of my liver,

and the stomach discomfort on occasions and the stitch like twinges below the rib cage..he just said see how you go and yes I know its very mild but its just concerning Iv had this just under 2 weeks.

And I was fearing some sort of cancer or a tumour seen as I have had this for some time, bearing in mind the pain is not severe and I do feel well in general

Detailed Answer:
Below the right rib cage is where gallstones like to give symptoms. It might be discomfort only. Symptoms are usually associated with foods intake. Ultrasound should also visualize gallstones.
Sometimes stomach issues like peptic ulcer or stomach inflammation can give such symptoms.
So the first step is an abdominal ultrasound. Without it, hard to tell what else it can be.

Regards.
