Question: My blood pressure has gone down all day and is now 90/60. I am taking methotrexate once a week 10mg. and have been for more than 2 months. I have been ill with respiratory problem's for about 3 weeks, cough, cold, no energy. My question is: can methotrexate be a cause in this problem of low blood pressure and the inability to recover from a cold/flu?

Brief Answer:
No it does not contribute to low blood pressure

Detailed Answer:
Hi There

After going through the details provided by you i would like to tell you that methotrexate is basically an IMMUNOSUPPERSANT drug commonly used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases like psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn's disease and also in the treatment of some cancers as a chemo agent.

Side effect commonly encountered with its use are:
diarrhea
joint pain
reddening of the skin
sores in the mouth or lips
stomach pain

Less common side effects are : blurred vision, confusion, convulsions (seizures),cough or hoarseness, dark urine, dizziness, drowsiness, fever or chills, headache, lower back or side pain, painful or difficult urination.

Now for your low Bp its advisable that you should consume good amount of fluids daily along with a bit increase in daily salt intake.

Also i would like to suggest you to get one Echocardiography done to see how well your heart is functioning.

Yes the delay in recovery from cold could be due to this methotrexate as it suppresses the defense system of our body.

I hope this information will be of help. If you have ay other query you can ask me back or else you can close the discussion and kindly rate the answer.

I wish you good health
