Posted on Fri, 20 Mar 2015
Question: HI, my name is XXXXXXX I am female 54 years old and have been experiencing neck pain on left side
up to the base of skull. This usually comes on with fatigue, feeling really tired and if I do not take advil
it will develop into a migraine. I have had migraines for many years and take Axert to relieve them. It seems this left neck stiffness and pain with fatigue is becoming more and more. If I did not get enough sleep or overuse my upper body this neck pain begins. Is this something I need to get checked out and what causes this? I am very active so it starting to be more noticable. Is something developing?

Brief Answer:
detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Seems that the problem is the neck pain and this triggers the headache.
The most possible cause is a tension headache which occurs when neck and scalp muscles become tense and contract. This can happen probably due to bad posture ,working long hours in an uncomfortable neck position , activities that causes the head to be held in one position for a long time such as typing, computer work etc.
Sleeping with the neck in an uncomfortable position may also trigger a tension headache.

Other possible causes for neck pain and stiffness with fatigue include:
-Fibromyalgia
-A problem with cervical spinal cord like arthritis, cervical herniated disk

If the symptoms have been present for a while now and they doesn't seem to improve, I suggest to consult a physician for examination.
You may need to get an X-ray or CT-scan ,MRI of the neck done to exclude pathological changes in neck.
After a detailed medical history and physical examination ,your doctor will decide if you need further investigations.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you need further help.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
