Suggest Treatment For Knee Discomfort While On Levofloxacin

Posted on Tue, 14 Feb 2017
Question: I was given azythromiacin for pneumonia and it didn't seem to work so after 5 days Dr. started giving me levofloxacin. I understand azuthromiacin stays in your system for another five day so in effect I was on both antibiotics for 5 days. As soon as I finished the Levofloxacin I woke up with my knees feeling like there was fluid in them because I couldn't flex them, squat down, get up from the floor without assistance, things I was able to do before with no troube at all. I don't have pain, just discomfort on my knees but he way my flexibillity and strength is limited and decreased is my main concern. This very same thing happened to me a uear ago when I was i n the same situation. At the time I suspected the antibiotic had something to do with it because the problem started just out of the blue inmediately after stopping the antibiotic. My knees improved gradually throught the year but never seemed to get back to normal. Now the problem is back again and I want to understand what it may be and if it could have a relationship to taking this antibiotic or more so the combination of both. I am a 64 y.o. woman in good health other than having recurrent bouts of pneumonia. I'm in good physical shape. I'm 5'6" and weigh 135 lbs. I was always able to play with my grandchildren on the floor, get back up etc, problem. I would like to know your opinion on why something like this would happen so suddenly.

Brief Answer:
It could be osteoarthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

Some of the remote or less common side effects of levofloxacin are muscle pain and tendonitis. But I I haven't noticed such side effects, nor the swelling of the joints is mentioned anywhere as such.

Considering the age, it could be osteoarthritis. Yes, either way please consult an orthopaedician who can examine you and advise you accordingly.

Hope this answers your query. Please feel free to ask in case of any further queries.

Take care.
