Question: My H&H has been low for 3 months. September 2013 my H&H was 13/38. December 2014 it was 9/31. March 2015 it's 8/30. Iron levels checked on 12/16/14 = Iron 21, Iron Binding 384, UIBC 363, %Iron Sat 5, Ferritin 7. After 3 months of Iron 65mg once daily my Iron is 23, %Iron Sat is 6 and Ferritin level is 11. I have no chronic bleeding. EGD and Colonoscopy good, no H Pylori or celiac disease. I do have nodules in my thyroid and a borderline low thyroid studies. The thyroid antibody test was positive. I don't recall that value. I have joint aches, pedal edema, intermittent chills and sweats, I can't walk a city block without being short of breath. I am 50 years old, 5'6" and 288 lbs. I have been advised to receive Iron infusions once weekly for the next 8 weeks. Is this the best course?

Brief Answer:
Iron deficiency anemia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
You have iron deficiency anemia that is sure from your iron and ferritin level study. Your breathlessness may be due to low hemoglobin. You need iron replacements. That is sure.

You should search the cause of your anemia. You may have chronic bleeding from unknown cause. You should go for occult blood is stool test and ultrasound abdomen and examination to rule out excess genital or gastrointestinal bleeding.

For iron supplements you can take oral iron tablets like ferrous sulphate or ferrous fumarate. Or injectable iron like iron dextran or iron sucrose.
You have been advised to receive iron infusion once a weekly. It is perfect treatment. You should start that.
Don't worry. Just be relaxed. Repeat your hemoglobin and ferritin level after 1 month of treatment.

You may have hashimotos thyroiditis. It is auto immune thyroiditis. If needed go for fine needle aspiration cytology of thyroid to confirm diagnosis and then take treatment accordingly.

Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic.

Wish you a very good health.
