Suggest Treatment For Frequent Bowel Movement And Watery Stool

Posted on Wed, 23 Sep 2015
Question: I had 8 motions today. Except for the first 2, all were watery. I had taken O2 tablet 3 hours back. Three (of the 8) after taking O2. The urge is still there. I skipped breakfast and Boiled Semi-crushed Millet with a little curd for lunch. Should I take Lopamide or any other medicine? I have taken my regular LTK 50 with Supradyn in the morning and continuing with Electral.

Brief Answer:
Yes,lopamide can be taken but you will need other medicines also.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

You seem to be having acute infective diarrhea considering your watery stools.

Before starting medications,it would be advisable to undergo routine blood counts,ESR with serum electrolytes especially sodium and potassium.

Generally,it might take 48 to 72 hours to subside watery diarrhea following appropriate antibiotics and other symptomatic medications.

Therefore,you should

1) continue with O2 antibiotic for at least 4 to 5 days with

2) antiemetic (ondasetron) if you feel nausea or vomiting,

3) antispasmodics (dicyclomine) if abdominal pain or discomfort.

4) prebiotics and probiotics (sporolac-DS) with racecadotril 3 to 4 times a day to restore intestinal bacterial flora.

5) Take plenty of water with fruit juices to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in body.

6) Avoid heavy diet and take light or liquid diet for minimum 3 days.

7) Lopamide (Loperamide hydrochloride) can be taken 2 to 3 times a day which actually slows the movement of the intestines. This allows water to be absorbed from the stool, so the stool becomes more firm.

You can continue your LTK 50 with supradyn simultaneously.

All above medications are available over the counter except antibiotic and it might take 2 to 3 days to control watery motions.

Hope this detailed information will be helpful and i will be happy to answer if you need more clarification.

Answered by Dr. Sandip Kabra (28 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Quinolones are contraindicated in epilepsy.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the quick follow-up.

If you are having history of epilepsy and taking medications then you should use of ofloxacin (quinolones) antibiotics because they might cause fits (epilepsy) itself.

In that case, you can take anaerobic antibiotics like metronidazole (metrogyl 400 mg) three times daily which will also be effective in the treatment of diarrhoea but you will require prescription from GP for it as antibiotics are prescription drugs.

Regards,
