Suggest Medication For Vomiting And Diarrhea

Question: My daughter is 7 years old and weighs 47 kgs. She has diaorrhea for last 6-7 hours. She vomitted and has been passing watery stools. the vomitting is stopped but she has passed watery stools for 10-15 times. She also has a fever of 99.5.

Kindly suggest what medicines she should take.

Most common cause of loose motion and vomiting in this age is food poisoning (bacterial infection).
Giving combination of ciprofloxacin with tinidazole or ofloxacin with Metronidazole helps in such cases . Antibiotics usually need to be given for 4 days. As the weight is 47 kg she can be given adult dose of antibiotics. These are prescription medicine so get it prescribed by any physician.
Give plenty of ORS with fluids to avoid dehydration.
Zinc supplementation for 14 days with probiotics for 4-5 days will also help. Paracetamol will help in controlling the fever.
These medications will help in controlling the symptoms.
I won't get worried if there is no vomiting, child is taking fluids well and there is no blood in stool . If you notice any significant abnormality like decreased urine frequency, blood in stool, vomiting or poor oral intake please consult your pediatrician immediately.

Thanks for your quick reply. Can we give here Powergyl as antibiotic? if yes, then kindly suggest dosage. Also do suggest what zinc supplements and probiotics she can use and in what dosage?

Powergyl contains Norfloxacin and Metronidazole. You can give this antibiotic.
Probiotics like Enterogermina or Econorm can be given in a dose of one XXXXXXX twice a day for 5 days. Zinc (like zinconia)should be given 20 mg once a day for 14 days.
These medicines are prescription medicines so please get it prescribed by any pediatrician.
In case of any significant abnormality please consult your pediatrician immediately.
