Suggest Treatment For Fever And Vomiting In An Autistic Child

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Apr 2017
Question: My son (Carson) is 9 1/2 years old, autistic, and adopted from birth. He has not really felt very well for 10 days now. he has had a fever off and on to 101.8 give or take. His normal temp. is 99.3. he has also complained a couple of times that his leg hurts (but he has not done anything to it that we can see or that we know about). Then today he started vomiting, and has not kept anything down. when I have tried to look up symptoms on my own I have come up with either a possible spider bite or the mumps. I am just trying to figure out if he should go to the emergency room or not. Thank you Mrs. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXX, YYYY@YYYY (000) 000-0000, XXXXX XXXXXXX CO

Brief Answer:
Please get him to a physician for evaluation and treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Welcome to HCM

I have gone through the query and do understand your concern.
Fever on and off for ten days and now vomiting can be due to some intestinal infection.
In mumps there is swelling of cheek area on one side or may be both side. Also fever remains of high grade with upper respiratory symptoms. As you have not mentioned any of these I don't think this is mumps. Leg pain can be there due to fever and is common in this age if it is not severe enough to disturb walking or standing.
Similarly spider bite also presents with different symptoms.
Unattended infection may get worsened and it immediate care should be taken for this . Frequent vomiting may cause dehydration and further complications.
For time being you may give acetaminophen for fever and ondensetron for vomiting.
I would request you to get him evaluated by a physician as early as possible for better care.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Wishing for your child's good health.
Regards
