Suggest Treatment For Fever And Cough

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Aug 2017
Question: My Wife is suffering from a dry hacking cough. It is almost continuous (say several times a minute.) It started after having fought a flu-like condition with a low-grade fever (under 101 degrees) for 4 days. She is a non-smoker. Cough medications are not working. She sometimes feels like there is phlegm to spit up, but nothing happens. The cough is persistent and has kept her up for the past two nights.

Brief Answer:
consider these medications

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking HealthcareMagic,

I can understand your concern for your wife,

Yes, it might be that during or after having a viral common cold a hacking dry cough happens and lasts for up to one/two months.

Generally, there is a very small amount of phlegm indeed that can aggravate such a cough.

For this, I'd recommend her to take cough suppressants medication (like Codeine tablets twice orally) for the time being, and a steroid inhaler (like Budesonide inhaler twice daily for at least two weeks). You may need a prescription from your local physician for these.

If she has stomach problems like acid reflux too she might add some antiacids like Omeprazole once daily before breakfast.

Usually, a silent reflux may play a role in this situation also.

So please follow the above first and feel free to ask me again.

Regards

Dr.Jolanda
