Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2015
Question: I have a grandson that is 16 and last April he had his wisdom teeth at the bottom removed. He has been having pain on both side of his face We assumed it was TMJ but the treatment didn't help. He had a mouth piece made but that hasn't help. He comes home from school in pain, not eating all day and is very upset about the whole thing. We have taken him to a dentist,Chiropractic, and family physician. What do you think we could do next?

Brief Answer:
TMJ disc displacement, teeth infection, medication

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query.
As far as the pain in the face is concerned i have two possibilities.
It can be because of the temporomandibular joint disc displacement secondary to grinding of your teeth during night time or bruxism. During this process the muscle around the joint will go for contraction. The other possible cause can be secondary to any teeth infection. Nothing to be panic, consult a good oral physician and get it evaluated. Mean while you can take analgesics like ibuprofen and muscle relaxants like chlorzoxazone(if you are not allergic). You need to get a radiograph like OPG done to confirm the diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, we can treat accordingly. You can give hot fomentation over the muscles and joints.
I hope my answer will help you, take care.
