Suggest Treatment For Excessive Flatulence And Burping

default
Posted on Sat, 11 Feb 2017
Question: I was Diagnosed with GERD in 2003, Endoscopy in 2011 changed to NERD. Since 2003 I've been on Nexium 40 mg daily. Recently, large amounts of mucus build up and I've experience burping after eating, drinking water. My recent blood work revealed my EOS differential was high. Historically, I've had sinus issues and attributed the build up to drainage. However, now burping, flatulence, are prevalent along with hoarse voice. My concern is with Barretts and E. Cancer. I've read studies that Non Erosive Reflux Disease doesn't need testing for Barretts. My question is : If this condition is something more than NERD would it likely be Barretts first?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking !

I read carefully all your concerns and I can say as follows :

1. First of all your symptoms are typical for reflux disease ( burping, flatulence, hoarse voice).
These symptoms are not suggestive for Barrett's esophagus ore more.
2. Otherwise since you have done the last endoscopy 6 years ago , to my opinion you need to repeat it.
The reason why I suggest to repeat it is because your condition may have changed from NERD to GERD.
PPI's like nexium are not as effective in NERD as in GERD.
3. The other reason is that Barret's esophagitis may be ruled out only with endoscopy and biopsy.

With regards to E.Cancer, I can say that usually E.Cancer has typical signs and symptoms like dysphagia and and pain during feeding. These symptoms are not present at your case.

Hope it was helpful to you.
