Question: My father has had 4 strange episodes about 2 or 3 months apart. He becomes disoriented and then he falls asleep and is virtually unarousable. If he is shaken awake he will mumble and act confused but then he instantly falls back asleep. He stays in this state of coma like sleep for about 4 hours. He wakes up and sees double for awhile and then acts completely normal. He is 86 years old. We have taken him to the emergency room. He has had a complete neurological work up. They can't find anything wrong. He is in the middle of an episode right now.

Brief Answer:
Excessive daytime sleepiness to consider.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HealthcareMagic.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

In my opinion, excessive daytime sleepiness, should be considered in your father's case.

Excessive daytime sleepiness may be caused by conditions such sleep deprivation, metabolic disturbances, sleep apnoea, medications, neurological disorders such seizures and psychiatric disorders such depression.

In my opinion, polysomnography ( sleep study ), is one of the necessary examinations in order to achieve a correct diagnosis.

Please discuss with your father's primary care Doctor about these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.
