Suggest Treatment For Excessive Cough And Cold

Posted on Sat, 11 Feb 2017
Question: I have had a cough for the last 2 months. I had a terrible cold a few weeks ago, but this cough is dry, aggravated by talking, cold water, and other unknown things. This seems different than post-nasal drip I have often had. People have said "you have to do something about that cough" Warm coffee seems to make it better. I don't know what to do.

Brief Answer:
Information on cough.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Two months is a long time to have a cough!

At this point, I recommend that you go in to your doctor or an urgent care clinic and get a chest X-ray.

Most coughs are caused by passing viral infections that cause post nasal drainage, but not always.

Coughs can also be caused by certain heart/blood pressure medications (ACE inhibitors), acid reflux (acid going up high enough in the throat to trigger the cough reflux), having inhaled a small foreign object, lower respiratory infections and sometimes tumors, thyroid problems, heart problems, smoking or exposure to some irritant in your environment.

So it's time to go in and have your throat looked at for signs of post nasal drainage, have your chest listened to, and get a chest X-ray.

It's possible that this is a residual problem from the very bad cold you had a few weeks ago, and may take some additional time to clear, but at this point you should go in and be seen.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
