Suggest Treatment For Excess Mucus In The Throat

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: Two years ago, I had a prolonged and intense case of bronchitis. I subsequently went to pulmonologist and was diagnosed with a mild case of asthma. So mild that in the two years since, I never needed an inhaler. Although one big problem persists. This happens mostly at night, but it can occur during the daylight hours. I am fine one moment, but then I sense mucus in the lower throat area, and then start to choke on the mucus. It usually happens about 30 to 60 minutes after lying down going to sleep, but, out of the blue, it happened today just as I was leaving for the office. I have been drinking a fairly low amount of water, but have decided to significantly increase my water intake to see if that help. Any suggestions?

Smoke? Dear god, no. I try to eat super healthy, many green smoothies (the healthy low sugar ones, mostly veggies), and frequent a far infrared sauna (almost every day).

No hypertension, no diabetes. Cholesterol slightly high (about 230). My recent blood results were excellent (my best ever) except for PSA which I will retake soon.

Hi Dr.Bhavsar and thank you for helping me. No allergies of significance. (I do have a reaction when drinking certain wines and alcoholic drinks, but nothing salient to our discussion). My wife does have some reaction to the seasonal allergies. It's possible I have some reaction to a seasonal allergy (i.e. pollen) that I have developed later in life, but my episodes of choking on mucus occurred prior to the allergy season.
My mucus appears to be partially white, partially clear. I am having a difficult time sleeping, and I am mentally down, meaning I do not look forward to doing the things I used to enjoy. Are these symptoms of CHF?
To clarify, I almost never drink alcohol. My last drink was a beer in November.
Also, I have a hiatal hernia, diastasis recti, an enlarged lymph node on my neck that a recent CT confirmed is not worrisome. I did have a very bad case of bronchitis two years ago, but have not been sick since, but I think triggered my asthma. My workouts have been curtailed due a knee injury in March and a recent shoulder injury that I will have MRI'ed on Friday. Hmm, let me think if there is anything else.....

Brief Answer:
Get done fresh PFT.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Possibility of congestive heart failure is less likely.
But for confirmation your need to get done 2d echo.
In my opinion, you are mostly having worsening of asthma which is causing all these symptoms.
So please get done fresh PFT report.
Please let me know
1. Do you have any family history of heart diseases?
2. Which inhaler you are using?

No heart disease in family history. The only inhaler I have is a rescue inhaler, but I have never used it, due to symptoms almost non existent during daylight hours (except for the one time choking incident in the morning). The only symptom I feel at night is the choking almost always after lying down for sleep. (Usually it takes 30 minutes after lying down.) Actually, after the choking incidents, all I need is a sip of water and I feel pretty good thereafter.
Also, I do have a gag reflex, so I am sure that is making the choking incidents more intense than they would be otherwise.
It is possible that my asthma is not bad for most of the day, since I have been practicing the Buteyko method (a Russian doctor who developed a breathing therapy that he claims cures asthma.) Not sure it cures it, but I would not be surprised if it has helped me a great deal.

What is your weight?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Honestly speaking, there is no other cause for your symptoms except asthma. So better to get done fresh PFT.
Another less likely cause is sleep apnea.
So please let me know
1. What is your height?
2. What is your weight?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

I am 5' 8", 178 lbs. I have a fairly athletic build, although I tend to have my upper abdominal area bloated as the day goes on, and after eating. (My hiatal hernia?)

Also, something I meant to mention. I tend to be a bit hoarse as the day goes on. My voice is pretty clear in the morning, but by mid afternoon, it's somewhat hoarse. is that due to the asthma? If not, what could cause a throat to go hoarse as the day goes on?

Brief Answer:
This is mostly due to GERD.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
All these symptoms are mostly due to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
Hiatus hernia is the risk factor for GERD.
GERD is due to laxity of gastroesophageal sphincter. Because of this the acid of the stomach tends to come up in the esophagus and cause symptoms of throat like hoarse, bloating, burning epigastric pain etc.
So please let me know
1. Are you taking any drug for hiatus hernia?
2. Do you have burning epigastric pain?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks
