Question: When ever I eat something, solid or semi solid. It gets stuck in my esophagus. It will neither go up nor down. I end up finally being capable of making myself vomit and it use to come out in a perfect tube approx. 3/4 inch in diameter and about 4 inches long. Now its has no structure to it and I have to liquify my meals and drink slowly. Started acting up about 3 months ago

Brief Answer:
Consideration

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

Your current symptoms necessitate a consultation with a gastroenterologist. It seems that you might have a narrowing of your esophagus or it's possible that the normal motility of your esophagus has been disturbed.

The most definitive way to evaluate this would be to have a physician insert a camera into your esophagus to evaluate the entire length of the structure. If there is a narrowing it can be dilated which can lead to significant improvement of your symptoms.

if there is a problem with the motility of your esophagus sometimes medications can be used to facilitate normal function.

I would recommend that you discuss this with your physician. Your doctor can request an x-ray of your esophagus which is performed with a contrast which you swallowed before the x-rays done. this can give your doctor an idea of where the narrowing might be occurring in my provide some clues as to why it is happening.

Thank you again for sending your question. I think it would be prudent for you to see your doctor to discuss this and possibly have your doctor provide you a referral to see a specialist in the field of gastroenterology.

Thank you again for sending the question.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
