Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Spleen And Herniated Disc

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Mar 2015
Question: Went for a CT scan a few months ago for stomach pain. Doctor called me and said everything was fine. I went online and logged on to see the results last week and it said I have an enlarged spleen and a herniated disc. Should I be worried that my doctor never told me. I am more concerned about the spleen.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Any recent history of illnesses? Listed a few causes for you sir

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I would first like to start by listing the conditions that can cause an enlargement of your spleen, they are:

+Parasitic infections (e.g. malaria)
+Viral infections (e.g. mononucleosis, dengue, hepatitis, etc.)
+Bacterial infections
+Liver abnormalities
+Anemia
+Obstruction of blood flow to the spleen
+Metabolic disorders
+Trauma
+Tumors (rarely)

If at all you have experienced any of the above causes and can relate to any one, then the cause for your spleenomegaly (enlargement of the spleen) is quite obvious and the enlargement will gradually subside. If not, then you should speak to your doctor about the same. A comprehensive blood panel will also help to look into a possible cause.

In my opinion, if your doctor does not feel it important enough to inform you about the inflammation it should be something he is expecting. Like for example, I had a patient with dengue fever a while ago, who returned to me during a follow-up and during the ultrasound became extremely anxious when he found out his liver was slightly enlarged. This is only because of the dengue fever, and is something that will slowly settle and become normal.

I would also like to point out that the enlargement of your spleen should not and will not cause any abdominal pain. So there could possibly be another cause for your pain.

As for the herniated disc, an MRI spine will be required to gain more information on the situation and physiotherapy can be initiated till the herniated disc is well imagined.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you sir.

Best wishes.
