Question: My mother has high Blood Sugar (Fasting Blood Glucose - 153 mg/dl, Post Prandial Blood Glucose - 265 mg/dl). She has also got allergies in her legs (might be eczema). Now she wanted to get treated for the leg allergy. But, as per advice from a local doctor she has to control her sugar level before she takes medication (injection) for controlling the allergy. What should she do?

Brief Answer:
Blood sugar level control is required.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

You have mentioned that your mother might be suffering with eczema with uncontrolled blood sugar levels and your doctor has advised you to control her sugar levels before starting on injectable medications to control her allergy.

I would like to what type of medication he would like to administer her. Most probably it has to be steroids if she has chronic allergy or eczema. If I am right then it is very important to control her blood sugar levels before starting on steroids as they can cause high blood sugar levels.

Blood sugar levels can be controlled with Hypoglycemic drugs or Insulin injections. If there is presence of infection or require early control of blood sugar levels then Insulin is preferred. But if the treatment can wait for a week then Hypoglycemic drugs can be preferred.

So, see a Diabetologist to control her blood sugar levels before starting the medications to control her allergy.

Hope this answers your query. If any further clarifications, will be happy to help you.

Regards.
