Question: I am taking Zoloft, Trazodone and Gabapentin. For the past week I have experienced constant muscle tightness to the neck, shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, fingers, back, ankles, feet, toes and legs. At times the muscles are so tight I cannot stand erect. Sometimes the neck muscles are so tight it is difficult to swallow. Today I have experienced chills with sweats and pain to the point I can't move. A family member has told me they can see the spasms. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Why are you taking these drugs?Medical history?

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX Volkman,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I feel concerned about you and would surely like to help but it is crucial to know that why are you taking Zoloft,Trazodone and Gabapentin?I mean what is your diagnosis for which you are on these medications?

Such a presentation can be observed in-
1)Thyroid dysfunction
2)Potassium and magnesium abnormalities
3)Fibromyalgia
4)Anxiety
Please get these investigations done-
1)Serum electrolytes(sodium,potassium and magnesium)
2)Thyroid function tests

Meanwhile, please start doing mental relaxation exercises to reduce the anxiety levels.

Is it after starting these medicines, that you are getting these spasms?I am asking this because Zoloft and Trazodone are known to cause muscle spasms, sometimes.

Please provide further details.

I am taking the medications for depression. The Trazodone helps me fall asleep although lately I only sleep 4 to 5 hours. My hands hurt so bad I can hardly hold a pen. My hands are swollen and tender to touch but no redness.

Brief Answer:
Should undergo a physically examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX Volkman,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

You did not mention here that, since when you are having these complaints? Is it after starting these medicines or even before that?

Anyway, tender and swollen hands must be examined by a physician to help make a clinical diagnosis.
You probably will need anti-inflammatory medicines for short duration. But this is just an assumption, and a definite therapeutic decision can only be taken after you get yourself physically examined.
Please get 'Thyroid function tests' and 'Serum electrolytes' as mentioned above and follow-up.

If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to answer.

Regards
Dr.Ajay Panwar,
