Brief Answer:
can treat with cold sore creams and pain killers if uncomfortable

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Cold sores are mainly caused by herpes simple virus 1. It is a common infection that is found in a large set of the population.

It is normally treated with anti viral creams such as abreva or zovirax. If there is some discomfort then the use of analgesic/antiseptic solutions such as diflam, chloroseptic.
If this is not possible then oral pain killers such as paracetamol can be used.

There is another cause of lesions at the corner of the mouth-angular cheilitis.

This can be related to different causes such as: infection such as yeast infection, iron deficiency anemia, deficiency of B vitamins.

You can monitor and use the oral agents mentioned if there is discomfort. If there is no improvement within a week ( the time cold sores would normally take to improve), then you can take him to his doctor for assessment for other causes.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
