Suggest Treatment For Burning Pain In Upper Right Quadrant Of Abdomen

default
Posted on Wed, 31 Dec 2014
Question: Hello,
I have been having numerous issues lately. Found out I have severe sleep apnea, sinus tachycardia and I just went to a gastro doctor this past week for upper right quadrant pain. They are wanting to do a endoscopy and I am scared. The pain in my upper right quadrant is a burning and depending on what I eat it feels a bit better for a while. I am taking bystolic for the tachycardia 5 mg once daily. I am curious if this is causing the pain or is it something else. The GI doctor does not think its my gall bladder because of the location of the pain. I do have a history of duodenal ulcer since I was 17 years of age. current age is 41. This pain seems to be aggrevated with stress. It is painful to the touch. I have slight diarhea and constipation at times. I am taking carafate to see if I get relief but nothing yet. I do have otc omeprazole and am thinking of trying this therapy until I go next week for the endoscopy. What should I do and what do you think is happening. I am so worried.
I have also been having breathing issues. I forgot to include that.

Brief Answer:
it seems to be related to gastrointestinal tract.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

So you have burning pain in the upper right quadrant of abdomen, pain that is influenced by food and aggravated from stress. These characteristic of the pain are indicative for a pain related to gastrointestinal tract ( gastritis, duodenitis ,duodenal ulcer ).
The fact that you have a positive medical history for duodenal ulcer in the past increases the possibility that this pain is related to this.
For this reason your doctor has recommended an Endoscopy to determine if the cause of the pain is due to stomach, duodenal conditions.

Bystolic (nebivolol) is a beta-blocker drug that lowers the heartbeats.Common side effects caused by Bystolic are headache, dizziness, tiredness, slow heartbeat, nausea, or numbness or a cold feeling in your hands and feet.
Sometimes it can cause abdominal pain but not such a localized pain with such characteristic.

You may try Omeprazole for some days .If the pain improves then it is a strong evidence that the problem is in your gastrointestinal tract(it may be just irritation like gastritis, duodenitis or ulcer).
Take Omeprazole 20 mg once a day before meal.

Meanwhile you should modify your diet:
-Avoid fatty ,processed foods, coffee ,alcohol, juices, acidic foods that trigger your symptoms.
-Eat small frequent meals instead of three major ones.
-Drink plenty of fluids.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you need further help.I will be happy to assist you further.

Is there any other testing other then the endoscopy that would help find the issue. I am terrified of this procedure being that I have apnea and tachycardia? And I will try the omeprazole. Thank you so much for your help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Unfortunately ,upper endoscopy is the gold standard to diagnose a gastric or duodenal ulcer.Other tests won't be specific .
This is the only procedure that allows to see directly the interior part of gastrointestinal tract.

You can start with Omeprazole and the diet modification and see what happens. If they improve your symptoms, your doctor may decide to treat it without performing and upper endoscopy.
Your doctor will calculate carefully the risks and benefits of endoscopy in your case and if it is really necessary he will recommend it for you.

Let me know if you need further help.
Take care,
