Brief Answer:
MRI scan will be better.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
You need to get an MRI scan done which is a more sensitive test for soft tissue and muscular problems like bursitis or rotator cuff tendonitis.
Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Motrin, ibuprofen, or Aleve can help with pain control and decrease inflammation.
Activities that cause the pain should be avoided. A physical therapy program that focuses on establishing non-painful shoulder motion and strengthening of the shoulder muscles will also be helpful.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

I hoping that an MRI would indicate a possible tear which a specialist would be able to repair instead of temporary fixes my family doctor would might want to do if they don't persue an MRI to see if there is damage that needs a specialist advice

Brief Answer:
Yes. I agree.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Yes. MRI scan will help in detecting any tears in the rotator cuff. In case it is a partial thickness tear then a conservative approach can help. Do consult an orthopedician after the scan for proper evaluation.
Hope my answer is helpful.
