Question: My mother is 60 year old lady and yesterday she got fallen to the floor (at my hometown) as it was wet.
Nobody , imagined it as fracture but today when we made the X-ray ,it shows as a broken wrist(attached is the X-Ray) .
The Orthopaedic Surgeon did the plaster but since I am at a distance and couldn't able to consult with him.
Could you please let me understand the following query.

2)How much time this would take to get cure.
3)Would it be completely fine in terms of flexibility and strength.

Brief Answer:
Colle's fracture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
1. Your mother has a minimally displaced colle's fracture. This is not very serious. It is a usual fracture in this age due to fall. It heals easily with minimal complications. Main problem seen is joint stiffness.
2. It takes 6-8 weeks to heal properly.
3. Usually the wrist regains full strength and flexibility. Some physiotherapy may be needed after removal of plaster.
4. She should avoid any movement of the wrist till it is healed and take calcium supplements.
5. Taking calcium and vitamin D3 is sufficient.
I hope this answers your query.

Many thanks Doctor for your quick and comprehensive reply.

My mother had traced with hyperthyroidism around 6 months before(she is cured now but still taking the required pills as recommended by the doctor) and traced with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) two years back(cured now).
I think this all caused her weakening of bones which lead to her wrist fracture.

Could you please help me to know what can be done to reverse all the odd effects the above two have caused and and can strengthen her bones like before as I am afraid this might happen to her again in say some other fragile bone.

thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Can be due to osteoporosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The fragility of her bones is due to age related degenerative changes in the bones and decreased new bone deposition with age. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis are common after menopause and can be controlled with the help of calcium and vitamin D3 supplements. In case the bones are too weak- can be detected by bone mineral density and serum calcium and Vitamin D3 levels then specific treatment may be needed under the guidance of an orthopedician. You can get her above mentioned tests done and start the treatment accordingly.
Hope my answer is helpful.
