Question: Why do I still have a feeling of not getting enough air? This is very annoying. I am retired do not work yet but will soon. I don't know if its allergies, some anxiety still or what. I have told my family doctor but I think he is not sure either. He tested my oxygen levels to but says its normal 93-98 range. Could it be that my body is getting use to my weight loss or what? I have lost 60 lbs. Any suggestions? I feel if I can get past this than I will be back to normal again. I have gone through much testing. The only doctor I have not seen is a pulmonary doctor.

Brief Answer:
You should see a pulmonologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

You should see a pulmonologist since you say that all your tests are normal. I hope the tests included an Echocardiogram and a HRCT Chest.

Pulmonologist will go into the further details of your breathlessness. You will have to get a spirometry and diffusion studies done if they have not been already done. If all these come out normal then your feeling of not getting enough air may be due to anxiety. In that scenario you may have to make an attempt to get over the feeling or consult a psychologist or psychiatrist for help.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to get back to me in case of any further queries.

I'm Sorry but I forgot to mention that I do have a hiatal hernia and I do have a small ulcer. (non bleeding). I was told that I had gastritis also. I am taking Pantoprazole for it. I don't know if this medicine is causing other problems like tightness in my stomach. I have had a lot of medical problems that just hit me all at once. Yes I am seeing a psychologist and she has been great. I just feel if I can get past the breathing issues and stomach issue I would be back to normal. I still may have some anxiety but it has improved. Could the hiatal hernia cause some of these breathing issues?

Brief Answer:
Yes a large hiatus hernia can cause breathlessness.

Detailed Answer:
Yes if the hiatus hernia is very big it may compress the lung and cause breathlessness. Do you also have reflux esophagitis because that may also contribute to breathlessness. I suggest you consult a pulmonologist or a gastroenterologist who can see things in detail and advise you accordingly.

Hope this answers your query.

Take care.

I have seen a gastroenterologist, he was the one who found the hiatal hernia and the small ulcer and my esophagus was normal. So can anything be done to correct a hiatal hernia? I figure surgery, but I have one friend that said she is now worse off than before which bothers me. I guess seeing a pulmonologist is the only thing left to do. Yes, I have obstructive sleep apnea also, this is what I meant to tell you earlier, All these problems hit me all at one time, this is why it has been so hard to deal with all these issues. I am suppose to pick up my CPap machine soon. The hiatal hernia is their new methods of treatment?

Brief Answer:
A small hiatus hernia is often left alone .

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Often a small hiatus hernia is left as it is, because symptoms may remain even after surgery. If there are any new methods for treating hiatus 5, only a gastroenterologist or a GI surgeon may be able to tell you.

The obstructive sleep apnoea could also be a cause of your breathlessness.

Yes, further weight reduction may help. Get your CPAP machine at the earliest. Using CPAP machine may alleviate your symptoms.

Hope this answers your query.

Take care.
