Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: My son got a sunburn 8 days ago and one area on my lower leg is still extremely red and swollen. This area blistered after the sunburn. He says it isn't that sore any longer. Should I seek medical attention of just keep applying cold compresses? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Acute sunburn

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic.
I understand from your query that your son has had a severe sunburn with blistering on his lower leg.

Blistering indicates a severe degree of sunburn. It will be associated with a lot of inflammation. Cold compresses and Ibuprofen will provide symptomatic relief, however, he may require a short course of oral steroids like Prednisolone for 3-5 days for the inflammation to completely settle.
He may also require an antibiotic cream like 2% Mupirocin to prevent any infection.
