Suggest Treatment For Bleeding Mole On Neck

Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I have a large mole on my neck that randomly started bleeding yesterday. It was in the morning so it's possible I scratched it in my sleep without noticing. Upon examination there is a black spot within the mole, which is alarming but could just be a scab. I am 24 years old and have family history of skin cancer. I've never been tanning, but spent 4 summers as a swim instructor at a outdoor pool all day and burn easily. Should I get this checked or wait to see if it's just a scratch that will heal on it's own in a few days?

Brief Answer:
hi and welcome

Detailed Answer:
There is no scientific support for statement that mole scratching leads to malignant alteration so this is one historical dogma. Mole can become malignant due to excessive sunlight exposure and genetic predominance. So this injury should not worry you.just keep this area clean and watch for signs of infection. From this photo I don't see some worrying features and I don't think that some urgent dermatological exam is required, but it would be good in future to do it and remove it if there is sign of dysplasia. But as I said,at this point, there is no need to be worried

I think you might have misunderstood, as I wasn't suggesting a mole scratch could lead to cancer. The mole in question started bleeding several hours into work for no reason. No injury occurred, but the possibly of it being scratched seems like a reasonable explanation. When I looked up bleeding mole online what shows up is that this is considered a sign of melanoma as part of the E (evolving) of the ABCDE warning signs. So if this was a spontaneous bleed should I get it checked?

Brief Answer:
hi

Detailed Answer:
It is not likely that spontaneous bleeding occur without previous signs of mole change.it is possible but this is rarity.evolving means changes in size and symmetry that happens during longer period. Spontaneous bleeding isn't actually part of evolving and it occur usually in ulcerative types of melanoma. So more likely it would be unnoticed injury,or rupture of angioma or arteriovenous malformation. but if you are sure that this was spontaneous bleeding than visit dermatologist as soon as you can .
